Located In the middle of Chesterton, Indiana, Indiana Dunes National Park offers a tranquil escape into nature. Established as the 63rd United States National Park in 2019, this park boasts not only stunning landscapes but also a rich variety of bird life native to the area. The park contains 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and an extensive 50 mile long network of trails.
Dos:
Camp at the Visitor Center: This is quite possibly the only park that allows camping in the visitor center parking lot. It's an easy experience and I enjoyed rolling out of bed to go collect my goodies and information in the morning. Located at coordinates 41.63433, -87.05404, this unconventional campsite offers both convenience and proximity to the park. Just make sure to respect the area and not overstay your welcome, we made sure to pack up and out before the center opened. The visitor center is roughly 2.5 hours from Indianapolis.
Collect Your Stamp: Remember to stop by the visitor center (if you don’t camp there) to collect your stamp. This small ritual makes for a delightful keepsake, reminding you of your time spent at Indiana Dunes National Park.
Conquer the Diana of the Dunes Challenge: Challenge yourself to conquer the three tallest sand dunes at the park, a feat known as the "Diana of the Dunes dare." While the ascent might be tough, the fun views from the top make it all worthwhile. Just be prepared for a few tears of exhaustion and triumph.
Explore the Dune Succession Trail: Take a leisurely walk along the Dune Succession Trail leading to Lake Michigan. Covering just one mile, this trail treats you to picturesque views of the dunes and the sparkling lake, offering a perfect blend of nature's beauty.
Scenic Drive and Overlooks at West Beach: Embark on a scenic drive around West Beach, stopping at the various overlooks along the way. Each viewpoint presents a different perspective of the park's landscape, providing ample opportunities for photographs.
Utilize Your National Parks Pass: If you're a National Parks pass holder, yay! You can use your pass for access to West Beach, making your visit even more budget-friendly and enjoyable.
Relax by the Lake: Indulge in the simple pleasure of lying in the sun and enjoying Indiana's delightful summer weather. With the serene Lake Michigan as your backdrop, this is the perfect way to unwind and connect with nature.
Dont's:
Neglect to Shake Off Sand: Indiana Dunes National Park is all about sandy shores and dunes. Make sure to shake off the sand from your shoes and belongings before heading back to your accommodations to avoid unwanted messes. Sand will be everywhere.
Stay for Extended Periods on a Tight Schedule: While the park is a haven of natural beauty, it's recommended not to plan an extended stay if you're on a tight schedule. The park's attractions can be explored within a day, leaving ample time for other nearby adventures.
Underestimate the Park's Value: Despite its relatively recent establishment as a National Park, Indiana Dunes holds significant ecological value. However, due to its late inclusion, it might feel more akin to a state park. Nonetheless, it's perfect for birdwatchers and sunseekers alike.
Indiana Dunes National Park offers a serene and picturesque environment that offers a calm getaway. Whether you're conquering sand dunes, capturing stunning vistas, or simply basking in the summer sun, this park promises a fun experience.
Onto the next sky!
