La Mauricie National Park

Near Shawinigan Quebec, Canada, La Mauricie National Park is a hidden gem that offers a breathtaking natural experience. Established in 1970, this park spans an impressive 207 square miles, encompassing a stunning landscape of 150 pristine lakes, surrounded by the Laurentian Mountains. The park is vast and quiet during the summer which made it the perfect place for a hiking retreat.

Dos:

  1. Stay at one of the park campsites: Immersing yourself in the park's wilderness is the best way to experience its beauty. Staying at one of the park's campsites not only provides you with convenient access to the trails but also allows you to fully appreciate the serene ambiance of the park. It is 27.25 CAD to stay in the park at a semi serviced site. The park also has some of the best facilities I have ever had at a National Park campsite.

  2. Take a dip in one of the park's many lakes: With a variety of lakes to choose from, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters. The summer heat can be intense, so a dip in these natural pools is a welcome respite. Just simply pick the first lake you see and jump on in.

  3. Hike the Les Cascades trail: For an unforgettable experience, hike the Les Cascades trail, which leads you to a picturesque waterfall. The cool spray from the falls is particularly refreshing on a warm summer's day, and the sight is simply mesmerizing.

  4. Hike the Lac Solitaire trail: If you're up for a more challenging adventure, tackle the Lac Solitaire trail. This 3.3-mile trail offers 830 feet of elevation gain, promising a rewarding workout. Along the way, you'll be treated to panoramic views of multiple lakes and the majestic mountains that surround the park.

  5. Enjoy a scenic drive along the Parkway: Sometimes, the best way to appreciate the beauty of La Mauricie National Park is from driving the park. The Parkway offers a picturesque route that winds through the park, showcasing its natural wonders. Along the way, you'll encounter two remarkable lookouts—the Saint-Jean-des-Piles Area and the Saint-Mathieu Area. These vantage points provide an unparalleled view of the park's vibrant colors, especially during the changing seasons.

  6. Cross Country Skiing: The park is not just a summer paradise; it transforms into a winter wonderland as well. If you're visiting during the colder months, don't miss the opportunity to go cross-country skiing. The park's extensive network of groomed trails offers an excellent way to explore its snow-covered landscapes.

  7. Pay the Entrance Fee: The park does have a 8.50 CAD entrance fee upon arrival that is good for 24 hours. Your contribution goes a long way in ensuring the park's continued beauty and accessibility.

  8. Travel by Car: Given that the park is approximately 2 hours from Quebec City, the most convenient way to reach it is by car. The drive itself can be an enjoyable part of your journey, as you'll witness the transition from cityscapes to the serene wilderness of the park.

Don'ts:

  1. Forget your rain jacket: While the summer months are an ideal time to explore La Mauricie National Park, July can be quite rainy. Be prepared by packing a good-quality rain jacket. Don't let unexpected rain showers dampen your spirits or your gear.

  2. Stand on an open cliff in the middle of a thunderstorm: Sometimes the allure of a dramatic cliff-top vista can be irresistible. However, safety should always come first. Always check the weather forecast before embarking on any hike. Thankfully the park does offer beautiful shelters by the lake if you need to hide out from the storm.

  3. Forget your bug spray: The summer months are known for the aggressive mosquitos so make sure to have bug spray handy for the trails and your campsite.

Onto the next sky!
